Sport is one of the most powerful phenomena in the world, with profound potential to foster justice and lift people up…
if only we would let it.
I love sports.
I love sports so much, that I desperately want to see it be better. When you truly love something, you cannot abide its shortcomings. I am awe-struck by the power of sports to lift people up, to unite us, and to heal us. But I am, in equal measure, appalled by how frequently sports have been used as a weapon to sow division, to exploit labor, to promote militarization and nationalism, and to marginalize already disenfranchised peoples.
Throughout my career in sports—as an academic, as a designer, and as a researcher—I’ve tried to use my work to shine a bright light on sports, to highlight the virtues and to expose the problems.
I want, above all, to see the unparalleled power of sports be used to promote justice for all. And I hope that my work, no matter the form, will push that mission forward.
